Kauraka e Mataku, kia Takatū! Don't be scared, be prepared!
Переглядів 3,8 тис.3 місяці тому
According to Ngāi Tahu creation stories, earthquakes are caused by Rūaumoko, the son of Ranginui (the Sky Father) and his wife Papatūanuku (the Earth Mother). Māori had experienced rū whenua, which means ‘the shaking of the land’ for centuries. The Alpine Fault is the longest naturally forming straight line on earth. It marks the meeting of two large tectonic plates and has formed over millions...
Ruamoko rumbles the Alpine Fault every 300 Years or so
Переглядів 2863 місяці тому
Science tells us that the Alpine Fault ruptures about every 300 years, and the last time was in 1717. These big earthquakes have been happening for millions of years and the next one is not a case of if, but when. A large Alpine Fault earthquake happening in our lifetimes is no doubt a scary thought! While we can’t predict when it will happen, we can work together to be better prepared for it b...
Prepare the Home, Protect the Whānau

The next large Alpine Fault earthquake will challenge us. It will take time to understand the impact and for the emergency response to reach everyone. Communities may need to be self sufficient and work together to keep each other safe. Preparing your home and your whānau for any emergency is the best way to keep everyone calm, safe and comfortable: • Remove or secure objects that could fall du...
Understanding our hazard risks prepares our whānau

When Rūaumoko decides to move the Alpine Fault again it could disrupt all our lifelines, electricity, roads and communications, making it harder for us to connect and support each other. A large Alpine Fault earthquake happening in our lifetimes is no doubt a scary thought! While we can’t predict when it will happen, we can work together to be better prepared for it by sharing our mātauranga (k...

The next large Alpine Fault earthquake will be long and strong and significantly alter the landscape of Te Waipounamu as we know it. Landslides, liquefaction, river changes, flooding tsunami and aftershocks are all likely. A large Alpine Fault earthquake happening in our lifetimes is no doubt a scary thought! While we can’t predict when it will happen, we can work together to be better prepared...

Honour of passing mātauranga through the generations
Переглядів 77 тис.6 місяців тому
In Mike Stevens’ (Kāi Tahu) whānau, taua and poua are at the heart of teaching mokopuna the mātauranga (knowledge/skills) tied to te hopu tītī (tītī harvesting). His great great taua Big Nana was insistent the whānau continue with the harvest and using pōhā (kelp bags), and Mike’s pōua, Tiny Metzger, honoured her by keeping up both. Mike, his māmā Barbara Metzger, and his tamariki are now conti...
Connecting to ‘who I am’ and whakapapa out on the awa
Переглядів 431 тис.6 місяців тому
Being out on the awa and connecting with the atua is “a good space” for Suzi Flack (Kāti Māmoe, Kāi Tahu, Kāti Huirapa ki Puketeraki). Physically, mentally, culturally, and spiritually, kaupapa waka is paramount to Suzi’s hauora (wellbeing) - and to who she is. “The main thing is culturally connecting to who I am, and my whakapapa,” she says. There are many things we can do to strengthen our ha...

My 4h great Poua Richard Dicky Barratt frst wife Wakaiwa was of Te Atiawa no Taranaki and set up and resided the Port Underwood whaling station for some time bck in the day too. And my line come of Poua Dickys second marriage Hinehou (of Kai Tahu decent) and on his best and loyal friend John agar Loves death bed, they both whangai one of his Children and I believe raised this child amongst our Kai Tahu people. Of what name this child was isn’t known to me. But none the less we have a great connect n shared history here also with our Te Atiawa whanau, whanui ne.
it is the finished product or must pe polished further, what is used for ?
Thank you. It is beautiful to hear the true names of places and see your smiling faces.
thank you so much. I am an American from Alabama who is writing a paper on British ecological devistation in New Zealand. This is my Thesis: British migrants who settled in New Zealand fundamentally altered the ecological landscape to its detriment by introducing new domestic species and viral pathogens, completing a rapid construction of industrialized cities and ports, performing a demographic takeover, and an agricultural transformation that fundamentally deforested large portions of the archipelago. Thank you for the helpful video with all the pronunciations because I am presenting in class tomorrow and this helped a lot!
Kia ora, any public access to these taonga?
What's the name of the instructor? Ilove her 😍
Why oh why do so many of these hangi vids fail to display the finished product. As kids the process was important for the very reason to assure it came up fully cooked. The proof is in the pudding. Always has been and always will be.
I watch this like 20 times cause of their voices they are so amazing
Such a great video I really enjoyed it thanks for sharing a small piece of your knowledge I make a similar balm but out of Manuka, nature provides us with every thing we need, ATB

Ataahua e hoa. Reminds me of my childhood at Whakaki, Wairoa District, Northern Hawkes Bay. I was bought up on the same tuna you are eating. The best. Good you and your whanau / community are keeping the lake clean so that that algae crap doesn't bugger up the fish / tuna especially. Nice stoney bottom lake which makes nice clean tasting tuna too. If ever i come down your way I'll drop in for a feed of tuna. We are whanau. You ancestor Tahu and my ancestor Ruawharo were on the Takitimu Waka together when it came to Aotearoa. Ma te wa e hoa.
